Cuts, Round 2: The Prospects

by ~ March 11th, 2012 at 12:55 pm

The Mariners sent 15 players to minor league camp today:

LHSP Danny Hultzen
RHSP Yoervis Medina
RHRP Scott Patterson
LHSP James Paxton
LHSP Mauricio Robles
RHSP Forrest Snow
RHSP Taijuan Walker

C Ralph Henriquez

MIF Nick Franklin
3B Francisco Martinez
INF Carlos Triunfel

OF Chih-Hsien Chiang
OF Joherymn Chavez
OF Darren Ford

DH Luis Jimenez

There was some buzz earlier in the offseason that Hultzen could make the club out of Spring Training, but the team made the right move here.  None of the players sent down were ever legitimate contenders for an Opening Day roster spot.

Interestingly, Erasmo Ramirez survives the cut.  Can he muscle his way into a crowded starting rotation?

The Mariners now have 33 roster players (including the injured Franklin Gutierrez and Adam Moore) and 15 non-roster players competing for 25 spots.

Ball so hard every hooker wants to fine me.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like this secures Saunder’s spot on the team, not necessarily as a starter, but at the very least as a late inning defensive switch because Ford was the only other true CF

Can someone please explain to me why the Mariners are not giving Alex Liddi any love? The guy hit 30 home runs last year in triple A, I know he strikes out a lot but the kid is ready to play and hit home runs at the next level. Seems they want to send him down and keep Seager (who stinks) and then they have another 3B prospect coming up. So why not deal him then?

Alex Liddi struck out 170 times in Triple A last season. That doesn’t translate well to the big leagues. That’s not to say he can’t improve or anything, but I wouldn’t call him ready…

Just seems the way they said he will go down to AAA and alternate between 1B and 3B to groom two other guys that they never plan on using him. Trade the guy somewhere then and let him try and play. Wasting a 23 year old IMO. Bad team like this should be playing the kids not Chone Figgins

These were the right moves at this point in time. It will interesting to see who ends up at the different minors levels. Jackson and Tacoma should be looking good this year. Where Walker ends up will be informative as it will give some indication of how the team plans to move him along. Erasmo not going down is also interesting. Iwakuma and Millwood need to step up their game if they want a rotation spot.  Right now I’d put Ramirez, Noesi and Beavan ahead of them.  It’s on Liddi to earn his spot, he hasn’t so far but her’s still young enough to make a future.

Liddi hit over .400 last year in spring and is hitting over .400 this year. Hard for him to earn it when he is not getting playing time. I think this guy can hit 25 plus homeruns a year in the bigs
